Anderson Plug Colours Explained: Grey, Red and Blue

Grey, red and blue Anderson plugs are often used to separate circuits in 4WD, caravan and canopy wiring. The important point is that colour is not just decoration: on genuine SB50 housings, the colour is tied to the mechanical keying of the connector. In most cases, plugs must be the same size, colour and keying to mate.

Colour does not create a universal wiring standard. A red plug is not automatically solar, and a blue plug is not automatically fridge power. The installer or vehicle owner decides what each circuit does. The safest approach is to match the connector exactly and label the circuit at both ends.

Grey Anderson plugs

Grey is the most common general-purpose colour in Australian 12V touring setups. It is frequently used for fridge power, solar input, battery charging and accessory feeds. Because it is common, the colour alone tells you very little about the circuit.

Red Anderson plugs

Blue Anderson plugs

Colour is not a substitute for a label
