Starlink in a 4WD or Caravan: RJ45 and 12V Mounting Guide

A tidy Starlink installation in a 4WD, caravan or camper has two separate jobs: carrying network data and supplying power to the equipment. Mounting an RJ45 passthrough beside a dedicated 12V connector can create one organised connection point without mixing the electrical functions.

Starlink hardware and cable arrangements vary between generations and conversion setups. Confirm the connectors, pinout and power requirements of your exact hardware before cutting a panel.

Start with a hardware map

List every component between the dish and your devices:

  • Starlink terminal or dish
  • Original or converted data cable
  • Router or third-party network equipment
  • RJ45 adapters or passthroughs
  • DC power supply or conversion equipment
  • Battery, fuse and switching arrangement

An RJ45 socket does not prove that a cable is electrically compatible. Check whether your setup uses standard Ethernet at that point and whether Power over Ethernet or a proprietary arrangement is involved.

Why use a panel-mounted passthrough?

A panel connection lets the external lead be removed without feeding the whole cable through a door or leaving a permanent gap. It also reduces loose connections inside the canopy and gives the cable a repeatable route.

Keep network and power clearly separated

Even when the connectors share one mount, treat them as separate systems. Label the network position STARLINK DATA or RJ45 and label the power circuit with its voltage and purpose.

Do not assume a general 12V outlet can power Starlink directly. The battery voltage range, DC conversion, connector polarity, current draw and protection must match the equipment being used.

Choose the Anderson position around the power design

Mounting location

Choose a position that is:

  • Easy to reach when setting up camp
  • Protected from direct spray and mud
  • Clear of doors, drawers and cargo
  • Deep enough for both connector bodies
  • Suitable for the network cable bend radius
  • Accessible from behind for servicing

A rear or side canopy panel can work well if the leads do not cross a walkway or become a trip hazard.

Plan the network cable route

Network cable can be damaged by tight bends, crushing and repeated movement. Avoid sharp panel edges and provide strain relief. Leave a modest service loop so the passthrough can be removed without pulling on the internal termination.

Keep data cable separated from high-current wiring where practical and follow the requirements of the network and power equipment manufacturers.

Installation sequence

  1. Bench-test the complete Starlink and power arrangement before modifying the vehicle.
  2. Confirm the RJ45 passthrough and cables work with the exact hardware.
  3. Choose a sheltered position and check rear clearance.
  4. Use the supplied template to mark the opening and fasteners.
  5. Cut and deburr the panel carefully.
  6. Fit the mount, gasket and hardware without overtightening.
  7. Support the internal network and power cables independently.
  8. Label both connections.
  9. Test data performance and power under normal operating conditions.

Weather and travel precautions

The mount and gasket create a neat panel interface, but the complete connection should not be treated as waterproof. Use suitable covers when disconnected, keep caps and contacts clean and avoid pressure washing the area.

  • Buying an RJ45 passthrough before checking the Starlink generation
  • Assuming an RJ45-looking connection is standard Ethernet
  • Powering equipment without verifying the required DC conversion
  • Crushing the data cable behind a shallow panel
  • Mounting where the external lead is exposed to cargo or footsteps
  • Failing to bench-test the complete setup first

A clean Starlink panel should make setup faster without hiding compatibility problems. Verify the hardware first, separate the data and power functions, then mount both connections where the cables can remain protected and serviceable.
