Single vs Double vs Triple Anderson Plug Mounts

The right Anderson plug mount is not simply the one with the most positions. Choose the smallest layout that handles the circuits you genuinely need, leaves room to grip each plug and allows the cables to bend safely behind the panel.

Choose a single mount when the job is clear

A Single Anderson Plug Surface Mount suits a dedicated solar input, fridge outlet, battery connection or trailer feed. It is easier to position in a narrow panel and keeps the circuit purpose obvious.

Single does not mean temporary. For a simple system, one well-positioned and clearly labelled connector is better than a larger empty panel.

Choose a double mount for a practical pair

A Double Anderson Plug Surface Mount is useful when two circuits are commonly accessed together. Examples include:

  • Solar input and fridge output
  • Vehicle charging input and auxiliary output
  • Two colour-keyed power circuits
  • Primary circuit and a planned spare

Label the direction of power flow where confusion is possible. INPUT and OUTPUT are more informative than using two identical POWER labels.

Choose a triple mount when three circuits have a real purpose

A Triple Anderson Plug Surface Mount can organise a touring canopy with solar, fridge, charging, compressor or trailer connections. It also reduces the visual clutter of three separate bezels.

Triple mounts require more width and rear cable space. Check that three heavy cables can be routed without sharp bends or crowding.

Should you add a spare position?

A spare can be worthwhile if an upgrade is already likely and the cable route has been planned. An unused connector should not be energised without a purpose, label and suitable cover. If the future circuit is uncertain, leaving physical panel space may be better than installing a live spare.

Mixing connector sizes

AFS Offroad mounts can suit selected SB50, SB120, SB175 and SB350 combinations. Different connector families do not mate with one another. Select each position around the electrical design, then verify there is room for all contacts and cables.

Custom combinations

Measure twice: front and rear

Check the visible panel width, but also check the connector bodies behind it. Leave room for:

  • Cable bend radius
  • Crimped contacts and heat shrink
  • Strain relief and cable clamps
  • Removal tools and servicing
  • Dust-cover lanyards
  • Finger clearance between plugs

Final checklist

  • Every position has a clear present or planned purpose.
  • Labels describe the circuit and direction.
  • Connector sizes match the cables and loads.
  • The panel has enough front and rear clearance.
  • The location protects plugs from cargo and spray.
  • The wiring design has suitable circuit protection.

Water protection: Dust covers, mounting gaskets and connector mounts discussed in this guide are not waterproof or watertight. Install them in a protected location away from direct spray, high-pressure water and immersion.
